Ethiopia is the second most populous country in Africa, after Nigeria, with more than 110 million inhabitants and an area of more than one million km2. With a low HDI of 0.448, Ethiopia ranks 173rd and remains one of the poorest countries in the world. It has a predominantly agricultural economy, weakened by droughts, food shortages and political conflicts, but is now moving towards an industrial and export economy. Since the 2000s, its GDP growth has been one of the highest in the world at around 10% per year (10.9% in 2017). This has enabled a large proportion of the population to escape extreme poverty, from 55.5% of the population in 1999 to 26.7% in 2016. In 2007, following a trip to Ethiopia by HSH Prince Albert II, the Debreberhan and Omorate projects were born, supervised by the Sisters of Divine Providence. MAP financed the construction of the “Princess Grace” nursery and primary school for 200 children, a refectory and kitchen for the Debreberhan school, and the drilling of a well in Omorate. In 2009, in Omorate, with support from the Monegasque Directorate for International Cooperation and UNOCHA, MAP completed a subsurface dam upstream from Lake Turkana. Since 2007, MAP’s assistance and presence has continued with support to the nutrition department of the Mendida clinic, the construction of classrooms in Aleltu and the funding of the Trampled Rose programme since 2014 to prevent early marriages and provide education for 130 girls.

In rural areas of Ethiopia, many young girls still face significant barriers to continuing their education, particularly due to economic hardship, the distance to schools, and early marriage. Through the Trampled Rose program, MAP supports the education of 140 young girls from the villages of Ankober, Aliyu Amba, and Sheno, located about 100 kilometers from Addis Ababa. By providing direct financial assistance, these scholarships enable them to continue their studies and help prevent early marriage as well as certain associated health risks. Several former scholarship recipients are now pursuing higher education.

Aleltu is a town located 55 km north of Addis Ababa on the national highway, in a region that relies primarily on agriculture and livestock farming. Its elementary school is the only one in the region and serves all the surrounding villages. The number of students continues to rise year after year, with more than 900 children enrolled in 2022.
In 2013, MAP funded the construction of a four-classroom building for the Aleltu elementary school. The following year, a second four-classroom building was constructed, along with two teachers’ offices. In 2016, MAP also contributed to the construction of a preschool and has since been providing these schools with school supplies and furniture each year, based on local needs.

In 2007, MAP funded the construction of the elementary school in Debre Berhan, a city located about 100 kilometers from the capital, Addis Ababa. The school has since grown significantly and now serves 1,200 students: 580 in middle and high school, and 620 in preschool and elementary school. Most of the students come from low-income families who cannot afford to feed their children before school. Through this project, 620 elementary school students receive breakfast every day, and 100 of the most disadvantaged students also receive lunch. In addition to providing nutrition for the students, this project also helps prevent school dropouts by encouraging parents to send their children to school and ensure they receive a quality education.

Support for Mendida Center

Since 2007, MAP has been running the dispensary in Mendida, a village 130 km from the capital, in the Oromiya region. Every day, the dispensary welcomes the most vulnerable families in the village and offers medical care to around 100 malnourished women, children and babies. During the first wave of Covid-19, the dispensary team was responsible for delivering meals, food baskets and medicines to families, to avoid any risk of the virus spreading.
Following the on-site visit in May 2023, an additional classroom is currently being built at the Mendida Elementary School, located within the center’s grounds, to accommodate 40 more students, bringing the total to 288.
