The Masstrust program, funded by MAP for over 10 years, provides medical follow-up care for 150 families in 96 villages in the Dindigul district. HIV-positive families are often reluctant to follow proper treatment out of fear of being excluded from the workforce and facing constant discrimination. The team must therefore carry out rigorous awareness-raising and support efforts not only with these families but also throughout entire villages to change perceptions of people affected by HIV. Five “Health Outreach Workers” provide essential medical care on a daily basis and ensure that patients adhere to an appropriate antiretroviral treatment regimen and triple therapy. But far beyond this medical care, these women offer vital emotional support, having themselves experienced the stigma and discrimination associated with AIDS.
