Lebanon

SINCE 2013

Lebanon, with a population of more than 5 million inhabitants for an area of 10,452 km2, has been facing since 2019 the most serious economic crisis since the end of the civil war of 1975-1990, accentuated by the double explosion in the port of Beirut on August 4, 2020. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) estimates that more than 85% of Lebanese currently live below the poverty line, compared to 32% in 1998 and 25% in 2005. Since 2013, MAP has maintained a friendly relationship with the association Les Amis du Liban, which has been working since 2002 to help Lebanese children who are victims of abuse, neglect and living in extreme poverty. With this in mind, for example, MAP supported in 2019 the purchase of survival kits (thermal blankets, heating, oil and food) for Syrian refugee families in the Beeka camp supported by the AWDE Association, located in the North of Lebanon, 45 km from Beirut, to the tune of €10,000. Following the deadly double explosion of August 4, 2020 in Beirut, MAP supported Les Amis du Liban in sending containers of food and medicine for €13,993 and in purchasing beds, mattresses, walking sticks and electrocardiograms for the Ain Ebel hospital in the south of the country, run by the Lebanese Army. MAP, the Friends of Lebanon and AMADE have decided to mobilize together in order to rebuild and rehabilitate the School of the Brothers Saint-Joseph, educating 400 children of different origins from kindergarten to high school, by contributing 40.000 € each.

Mission

From 7 to 11 November 2021, Ms Pilar Klemm and Mr Nicolas Ryter went to Beirut as part of a mission to monitor the projects supported.

Contribution of medical equipment from the Ein Ebel Hospital

The Ain Ebel hospital, located 3 hours south of Beirut, is run by the Lebanese army. A former medical facility administered by the Maronite Church, rehabilitation and expansion work began in early 2020. The majority of the region’s inhabitants are Shiite, but the facility welcomes patients of all faiths. During the mission in November 2021, Ms. Pilar Klemm and Mr. Nicolas Ryter visited the different rooms fitted out with the material donated by MAP in 2020. Once completed, this structure should be able to accommodate 10 to 15,000 people per year, and will serve the entire region, which currently only has the nearest hospital in Beirut.

Objectives

To provide the medical equipment necessary for the proper functioning of the hospital.
