Nepal

SINCE 2007

Nepal, located between India and China and famous for its temples and Himalayan mountains, has a population of nearly 30 million, with an average HDI of 0.602. Although it accounts for only 0.025% of greenhouse gas emissions, Nepal is one of the most vulnerable and affected countries by climate change, having lost a quarter of its glaciers between 1997 and 2010. MAP’s projects are concentrated in the remote Rigaon region, which comprises a cluster of 27 villages located at an altitude of 1800 – 2000 metres in the Himalayan mountains. MAP has funded the construction of two schools in this region: Dhuseni Primary School in 2007, expanded in 2012 to accommodate an average of 75 students, and Rigaon High School. Its construction had begun following the visit on October 26, 2011 of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, who laid the foundation stone of the building. The latter, co-financed by MAP, DCI and the Namasté association, was completed in 2016, and currently consists of 12 classrooms and a canteen, for nearly 400 students. On April 25, 2015, a terrible earthquake hit Nepal and more specifically the Rigaon region. The Dhuseni school was completely destroyed, and the Highschool, which had just been inaugurated the day before in the presence of a large delegation from MAP and the Namasté association, had required major restoration work. MAP provided emergency ‘post-earthquake’ aid to rebuild villages and the reconstruction of the Dhuseni school to earthquake resistant standards in 2017. After 10 years, the association Namasté, which had been founded and chaired by Ms. Nancy Dotta, joined MAP at its Extraordinary General Assembly on October 21, 2019.

Mission

Since 2009, Mrs. Nancy Dotta, administrator and responsible for Nepal, ensures a mission each year, often accompanied by a group of volunteers. From October 26 to November 6, 2022, Ms. Nancy Dotta, Mr. Nicolas Ryter and a group of volunteers traveled to Rigaon to follow up on the projects and assess the needs on site.

Post-Baccalaureate Full Academic Scholarship Program

After the construction of Rigaon Highschool in 2016, it was logical to support deserving and motivated bachelors wishing to pursue their academic or professional studies in Kathmandu or other major cities in Nepal. Indeed, during a mission in April 2015, a few days before the earthquake, a dozen senior students had expressed their desire to pursue higher education, supported by the school’s director, in order to then return to their village to contribute to its development. Our local coordinator, Premrose Tamang, based in Kathmandu, follows up on their studies and results, helps them find accommodation and visits them regularly. Since the beginning of the program, over 50 scholarships have been funded. The first fellow started teaching this year in his home village. One of the first science-medicine students became a health assistant and has now been working at the Gamrang clinic for 5 years. This sets an example for future generations.

Protection of the environment and enhancement of the territory

Environmental protection is a major concern for mountain villages like Rigaon. Nepal is indeed one of the most vulnerable and affected countries by climate change, having lost a quarter of its glaciers between 1997 and 2010. In addition to the North and South poles, the Himalayas constitute an essential “third pole”. Combining education and the environment has become a common thread in the design of the various projects carried out. In 2020, a botanical trail was inaugurated from Rigaon at 1,800 meters to a high point at 2,500 meters, with explanatory signs along the way detailing the flora and its properties. The first environmental study was also carried out by our technical partner, the company DOKO Recyclers, with the aim of enhancing the beautiful territory of the Nepalese mountains. Until now, packaging and various plastics were thrown away in nature. In order to remedy this, the first community recycling center will allow better waste management. At the school level, this is achieved through the ecoclub, a group of students who are responsible for raising awareness of the importance of the environment among their peers by organizing waste collection or fun activities, for example. It is by mobilizing different actors that the villagers will appropriate these projects in the long term.

Providing education for 500 students in Rigaon

MAP ensures the smooth running of three schools in the Rigaon region, built by MAP/Namasté: Dhuseni school since 2007 with 50 students, Salleri elementary school, built in 2009 by Namasté and inaugurated by H.S.H. Prince Albert II in 2011 with 50 students, and Rigaon highschool. In total, nearly 500 students are supported by MAP through this support, which includes maintaining buildings and repainting walls, building extensions or canteens, providing furniture, school equipment or solar panels, according to the needs expressed by the beneficiaries through NARAA, the local association of leaders in each village.
