Cameroon

since 1985
Cameroon is a republic of 27,745,000 inhabitants in Central Africa. Its capital, Yaoundé, has over 4 million inhabitants. As a major player in the region, Cameroon is faced with high levels of migration, which increases the proportion of young people living on the streets, mainly in Yaoundé. MAP has had strong links with the country since 1985, through several key projects such as the construction of schools, mainly in the north, the drilling of drinking water wells and helping widows through training in hairdressing, embroidery, sewing and childcare. MAP is closely linked to the Collège Christ Roi d’Obout, 64 km south of Yaoundé, having financed its renovation in 2016, and to the Saint Martin de Porres hospital, two institutions run by the Dominican Sisters congregation. In 2002, following a meeting with Father Maurizio Bezzi, MAP financed the construction of the Centre Edimar – Maison Princesse Grace, and has supported it every year since in its mission to reintegrate young people living on the streets of Yaoundé. More than 500 young people have been reintegrated in 20 years.

Mission

Since 1985, there has been a succession of missions to consolidate MAP's presence on the ground. From 21 to 28 November 2022, Donatella Campioni, Pilar Klemm, Nicolas Ryter and two members of MAP went to Cameroon to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Centre Edimar Princess Grace. They also visited the Obout school and the Saint Martin de Porres hospital in Yaoundé. The next mission will take place from November 7 to 15, 2024.

Center Edimar :
To live is to be called

In 2002, following a visit by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco to Yaoundé, MAP financed the construction of the Edimar Centre – Princess Grace House. The institution welcomes more than 160 young people in street situations every day and aims to offer them a better future and to support them in the development of their life projects. For almost 20 years, MAP has supported the Centre Edimar and contributes each year to cover part of its operating costs. Since 2020, an educational and professional scholarship program has been launched for 30 children and young people, with the support of the Government of Monaco. A second 3-year phase has been selected, and will be financed until 2026.

Objectives

To support Centre Edimar in its family, social and professional reintegration programmes for children and young people living on the streets.

The Hospital Center was founded and is managed by the Congregation of Dominican Sisters, who are also responsible for Christ the King College in Obout, rehabilitated by MAP in 2016.
