Project KERE: the answer to famine

MAP has been supporting the NGO Bel Avenir since 2022. The first project funded was the KERE project. Hundreds of thousands of men, women and children are suffering from malnutrition and lack of water in the south of Madagascar as a result of the drought. This food shortage is mainly due to the severe drought the country has been suffering for almost six years, but also to a very specific socio-economic context. The Malagasy call it “kere”, which means “lack of food”. Having consulted many communities, the NGO Bel Avenir decided to intervene with the population of the commune of Ambinany located 150 km from Tuléar. This choice was motivated by the real needs, the needs expressed by the inhabitants and the solutions achievable by the organisation.

Following an on-site mission to Tuléar in April 2024, MAP decided to fund the Tuléar Child Protection Platform, which fights against violations of children’s and young people’s rights, and in particular the physical and sexual violence prevalent as a result of ubiquitous sex tourism. This platform offers a range of solutions for these young people, such as reception in social hostels with psychological and health support, school support programs, nutritional education centers, emancipation activities through sport, art or music, vocational training centers, where the teams focus above all on guaranteeing their well-being, education and safety, and accompanying them in their reconstruction and recovery to orient themselves towards a personal, educational or professional future project.
